A Prayer for Anxiety
When anxiety rises, pray honestly and specifically. Name what you're afraid of, ask God for His peace, and choose to leave the outcome in His hands. The prayer below does exactly that. It's anchored in Philippians 4, where God invites us to trade anxious thoughts for a peace that guards the heart.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
A prayer
Father, my mind will not be still. The worries keep circling, and I am tired of carrying them. You said I could come to You with everything, so here it is, all of it, laid open before You. I cannot see the outcome, but You can, and You are already there. Quiet the noise inside me. Slow my breathing. Remind me that I am held, and that nothing about today catches You off guard. Where I have been trying to control what was never mine to carry, give me the grace to let go. Guard my heart and my mind with the peace only You can give, the kind that doesn't depend on my circumstances changing. I trust You with what comes next. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflection
Anxiety convinces us that if we just think about the problem long enough, we will finally solve it. But worry has never once changed an outcome. It only drains the strength we will need to face it. Scripture doesn't shame the anxious heart. It gently turns it in a better direction. "Present your requests to God," Paul writes, and he means now, right in the middle of the fear, not later once you feel calm.
The promise here isn't that your circumstances will suddenly change. It's that God's peace will guard you while you wait. That might sound like less, but it's actually more. You get God Himself with you in the storm, not just an end to the storm.
If anxiety is something you live with often, that doesn't mean you're failing at faith. You're human, and you're exactly the kind of person these words were written for. Pray this as many times as you need to today.
Common questions
What is a good short prayer for anxiety?
"Father, I give You every worry I am carrying. Quiet my mind, steady my heart, and fill me with Your peace. I trust You with what I cannot control. Amen." Pray it slowly and repeat it whenever the anxiety returns.
What does the Bible say about anxiety?
Philippians 4:6–7 invites us to bring every anxious situation to God in prayer, with thanksgiving, and promises His peace will guard our hearts and minds. 1 Peter 5:7 adds, "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
Can prayer really help anxiety?
Prayer turns an anxious mind away from the problem and toward the God who holds it. It isn't a replacement for medical or professional care when you need that, but it is a real and steadying practice that believers return to every day.
