A Prayer for Healing

A prayer for healing brings your body, mind, or heart honestly before God, asking Him to restore what is broken while trusting His timing and care. Jeremiah 17:14 gives us the words: 'Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.'

Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.
Jeremiah 17:14 (NIV)

A prayer

Lord, I come to you tired and hurting, and I am asking you to heal me. You know exactly where the pain is, even the parts I have not said out loud. I do not fully understand why healing takes the shape it does, but I trust that you see me and you are near. Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed. Restore what illness or injury has worn down, in my body and in my spirit. Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses caring for me, and give me patience while my body does the slow work of recovering. Where I am afraid, replace that fear with your peace. Where I feel forgotten, remind me that you are the one I praise, no matter what this season holds. Thank you for staying close to me through it. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

Jeremiah's prayer is disarmingly simple. He does not build a case for why God owes him healing. He just asks, plainly and directly, and lets his praise follow. That is permission for us to do the same, to bring our need to God without polishing it first.

It helps to remember that praying for healing is not a bargain we strike with God, and it is not a test of how much faith we can muster. It is a relationship where we bring our real bodies and real fears to someone who already knows them. Prayer works alongside good medical care, not instead of it, and there is no shame in needing both.

Healing does not always look like we expect, and it does not always arrive on our timeline. Some prayers are answered quickly, others slowly, and some we carry for years. What stays constant is God's nearness in the waiting, and that is worth praising him for even before the answer comes.

Common questions

Is it wrong to pray for healing and also see a doctor?

Not at all. Prayer and medical care work together. Asking God for healing does not replace treatment, appointments, or medication. Bring both your prayers and your prescriptions to your care.

What if I pray for healing and nothing changes?

That is a real and painful experience many people have. God's answers vary, and an unanswered prayer for healing is not a sign of failed faith. Keep praying, keep seeking care, and keep leaning on community.

What does Jeremiah 17:14 mean for healing today?

It is a model prayer of honest dependence. Jeremiah asks God directly for healing and salvation, trusting God's character rather than guaranteeing a specific outcome, which is exactly how we can pray today.
