The story behind the name

Naomi left Bethlehem during a famine with her husband and two sons, but in Moab she lost all three, leaving her a widow far from home. In her grief she told people to call her Mara, meaning bitter, saying "the Lord has made my life very bitter" (Ruth 1:20).

Yet Naomi was not left alone. Her daughter-in-law Ruth refused to leave her side, and together they returned to Bethlehem, where Naomi's wisdom guided Ruth toward Boaz, a kinsman redeemer. Naomi's practical faith helped set in motion a redemption she could not have orchestrated on her own.

When Ruth and Boaz had a son, the women of Bethlehem told Naomi, "He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age" (Ruth 4:15). A daughter named Naomi carries a name of pleasantness restored, showing that God can bring delight back into even the bitterest seasons.
