An Evening Prayer
An evening prayer closes out the day by turning your attention back to God, releasing the day's worries and remembering his presence through the night. Psalm 63:6 describes this quiet practice, remembering God on your bed and thinking of him through the watches of the night as you prepare to rest.
“On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.”
A prayer
Lord, the day is done, and I'm grateful for it, even the parts that felt hard. Before I close my eyes, I want to remember you the way David did on his bed, letting my last thoughts of the day settle on your goodness rather than my worries. Thank you for walking with me through today's moments, the ones I noticed and the many I didn't. Forgive me where I fell short, and help me release anything I'm still carrying, tight shoulders, unfinished tasks, unresolved conversations. I hand it all to you now. Watch over my sleep tonight, and if I wake in the night, let my mind turn toward you instead of anxious thoughts. Thank you for another day of life, for the people I love, for your patience with me. Quiet my mind, still my body, and let me rest knowing you never sleep and never stop watching over me. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflection
Evenings have a way of surfacing everything we managed to outrun during the day. The to-do list, the conversation that didn't go well, the worry about tomorrow, it all tends to arrive right when we're trying to fall asleep. Psalm 63 was written in a dry, weary place, and yet the psalmist's instinct at night was still to remember God rather than rehearse fear.
Remembering God through the watches of the night doesn't mean staying awake in vigilant prayer. It means letting your final thoughts before sleep, and whatever thoughts surface if you wake, be shaped by his presence rather than by anxiety. That's a practice, not a one time fix, and it gets easier the more you return to it.
An evening prayer can be as simple as thanking God for three things from the day and naming what you're releasing before sleep. There's real peace in ending the day the way you began it, turned toward the one who was with you the whole time and will be with you through the night.
Common questions
What is a good evening prayer before bed?
A good evening prayer thanks God for the day, releases worries into his care, and asks for peaceful rest, echoing Psalm 63:6's picture of remembering God through the night.
How can I stop worrying at night and fall asleep?
Naming your worries to God specifically, rather than letting them run in the background, can help. Praying before bed redirects your mind toward trust instead of rehearsing anxious thoughts.
Is it okay to pray a short prayer instead of a long one at night?
Yes. A brief, honest prayer said with real attention matters more than length. God isn't measuring your words, he's listening to your heart.
