A Prayer for Sleep

To pray for sleep, ask God to quiet your mind and settle your body in His safety before you try to force rest. Psalm 4:8 says we can lie down and sleep in peace because God alone makes us dwell in safety. This prayer leans on that promise when your thoughts won't stop running at night.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 (NIV)

A prayer

Father, it's late, and my mind is still running through the day, the conversations, the worries, the things I still haven't solved. I want to sleep, but my thoughts keep pulling me back to attention. You say that I can lie down in peace because You alone keep me safe, not my own vigilance, not staying awake to guard against every possible problem. So I'm choosing to believe that tonight. Untangle the thoughts that keep circling. Quiet the part of me that thinks I have to stay alert to keep everything from falling apart. You don't sleep, and You don't need me awake to watch over what matters. Let my body finally rest the way it was made to. Meet me in these hours with peace I can't manufacture myself. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

Psalm 4 was likely written during a season of real threat, yet it ends with one of the most disarming lines in the Psalms: I will lie down and sleep in peace. That's a striking claim from someone with legitimate reasons to stay anxious through the night. The peace isn't based on the danger disappearing, it's based on who is keeping watch.

Notice the phrase 'you alone.' It's a quiet correction to the instinct that says we're the ones responsible for keeping everything safe by staying mentally on guard. Lying down to sleep is, in a sense, an act of trust, an admission that you are not the one ultimately holding the world together while you rest.

If nighttime is when your worries get loudest, try praying this verse slowly as you settle in, rather than reaching for your phone or replaying the day one more time. Let the words become the last thing your mind holds onto, a small, repeated act of handing the night over to God.

Common questions

What is a good Bible verse to pray before sleep?

Psalm 4:8 is a well-loved verse for bedtime: 'In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.' Praying it slowly, phrase by phrase, can help settle a racing mind as you prepare for rest.

Why can't I sleep even after praying?

Prayer calms the heart, but sleep can still be affected by physical factors like caffeine, screen light, or an irregular schedule. Praying for peace works well alongside good sleep habits and, if sleeplessness persists, a conversation with a doctor.

Is it wrong to need help beyond prayer for sleep problems?

Not at all. Chronic sleep trouble can have real physical or medical causes. Prayer for peace and professional care for your body are not in competition, bring both to the situation rather than choosing only one.
