A Prayer for Hope

When hope feels thin, pray for God to refill it rather than trying to manufacture it yourself. Name what's discouraging you, ask honestly for joy and peace, and trust the Spirit to do what you cannot. This prayer leans on Romans 15:13, where hope overflows by God's power, not our effort.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 (NIV)

A prayer

God of hope, I come to You with less hope than I'd like to admit. The future feels foggy, and some days I'm not sure what I'm even waiting for anymore. I don't need a guarantee of how things turn out. I need You to fill the empty space where hope used to be. Give me joy that isn't dependent on my circumstances lining up, and peace that holds even when the answers don't come yet. I can't manufacture hope on my own, so I'm asking You to do what only You can do, to let it overflow in me by Your Spirit and not by my own effort. Steady my thoughts when they drift toward despair. Remind me that You are still working, even in the waiting. Let hope rise again, quietly, honestly, and rooted in who You are. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

Hope can feel like a decision we're supposed to make, as if enough positive thinking will get us there. But Romans 15:13 describes hope as something God fills us with, an overflow that comes from His power working in us, not from gritting our teeth harder.

That's good news for anyone who has tried to talk themselves into hope and come up short. It isn't a failure of willpower when hope runs dry. It's an invitation to ask the God of hope Himself to refill what's been drained.

Hope rooted in God doesn't require knowing how the story ends. It rests in trusting who is writing it. That kind of hope can coexist with real uncertainty, because it was never about having all the answers in the first place.

Common questions

What does the Bible say about finding hope?

Romans 15:13 calls God the God of hope and says He fills us with joy and peace as we trust Him, so hope overflows by the Holy Spirit's power. Hope in Scripture is something received through trust, not something we generate through willpower alone.

How do I pray when I feel hopeless?

Start by being honest about where you are, without polishing your words for God. Ask Him plainly to fill the empty space, name what's weighing on you, and lean on His character rather than your feelings in the moment.

Can hope return after a long season of discouragement?

Yes. Scripture consistently shows hope being renewed, not just felt once and kept forever. Romans 15:13 frames hope as an overflow that comes from ongoing trust, which means it can be refilled again even after it has felt gone.
