A Prayer for Perseverance

When you're tempted to quit, pray for the strength to keep going even without seeing results yet. Galatians 6:9 promises a harvest for those who don't give up, in due time. This prayer asks God for endurance in the exact stretch where motivation has run out.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

A prayer

God, I am tired in a way that sleep doesn't fix. I've been at this for a long time, and I don't see much to show for it yet, and honestly, some days I want to just stop trying. You know the effort I've put in that no one else has noticed. You know how close I've come to walking away. Help me not grow weary in doing what's right, even when it feels pointless right now. I'm not asking to feel motivated every day, I'm asking for the strength to keep showing up on the days I don't. Remind me that a harvest is still coming, even if I can't see it from here. Give me eyes for small progress instead of only the finish line. I want to keep going. Help me actually do it. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

Galatians 6:9 was written to people doing good work that wasn't yet paying off in any visible way, the kind of quiet effort that's easy to abandon because nobody's applauding it. The warning isn't against doing wrong, it's against growing weary in doing right, which is a distinctly different and more common danger.

The promise attached is specific: a harvest, at the proper time, if we do not give up. Farming language is deliberate here. Seeds don't sprout the day they're planted, and there's a long, unglamorous stretch between planting and harvest where nothing visible seems to be happening at all. Perseverance is what survives that stretch.

If you're in a season where effort isn't matching results yet, it's worth asking whether you're actually failing or simply still in the waiting part of the process. Scripture doesn't promise the harvest will come quickly, only that it comes to those who keep going. Let that be permission to keep planting, even today.

Common questions

What Bible verse is good for perseverance?

Galatians 6:9 is a classic verse for perseverance: 'Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.' James 1:12 is another strong option, tying perseverance to a promised blessing.

How do I keep going when I feel like giving up?

Start by naming honestly to God how tired you are, rather than pushing through in silence. Then ask for strength for just the next step, not the whole distance. Perseverance is usually built one faithful day at a time, not one heroic burst.

Does perseverance mean I should never quit anything?

No. Perseverance is about not giving up on what's genuinely good and worth pursuing, not white-knuckling through every commitment regardless of whether it's healthy or right. Wisdom sometimes means stepping away from the wrong thing so you can persevere in the right one.
