A Prayer for Your Parents
This prayer for your parents lifts up their health, their faith, and your relationship with them, whether it is close or complicated. Exodus 20:12 calls us to honor our father and mother, and prayer is one honest way to do that, bringing them before God with gratitude and care.
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”
A prayer
Lord, I bring my parents before You today. Thank You for the ways they have shaped me, even the imperfect ways, and for the sacrifices I may never fully know about. Watch over them now. Guard their health, steady them as they age, and give them peace in the seasons that worry them. Where our relationship is close, thank You, and help me not to take it for granted. Where it is strained or complicated, give me patience, honesty, and grace, and help me honor them without pretending everything is perfect. Heal old wounds between us where healing is possible. If they do not yet know You, draw them near. Help me love them well with the time we have, to be quicker to call, slower to judge, and more generous with forgiveness. Whatever our story holds, hold them in Your care. In Jesus' name, amen.
Reflection
The command to honor our parents is one of the oldest in Scripture, and it does not come with a footnote requiring parents to be perfect. Honoring them can look like gratitude, care, patience, and prayer, even in relationships that carry real complexity or old hurt.
Praying for your parents shifts the relationship, at least in your own heart, from grievance or worry toward care. It is hard to hold bitterness toward someone you are consistently lifting before God. That does not erase genuine wrongs, but it softens the way you carry them.
Whatever season your parents are in, aging, ailing, distant, or close, they are people God loves and invites you to bring to Him. If the relationship is painful, honoring them does not mean tolerating harm. It can simply mean praying for them honestly and treating them with the dignity every person made in God's image deserves.
Common questions
What does the Bible say about honoring your parents?
Exodus 20:12 instructs us to honor our father and mother, a command repeated throughout Scripture. Honoring parents can include gratitude, care, and prayer, and it does not require that parents be perfect or that every relationship be free of conflict.
How do I pray for a difficult relationship with my parents?
Be honest with God about the hurt rather than forcing false peace. Ask for patience, wisdom, and grace, and pray for healing where it is possible. Honoring difficult parents can mean praying for them and treating them with dignity while still keeping healthy boundaries.
How can I pray for my aging parents?
Pray for their health, their peace, and their faith, and for wisdom in caring for them as roles shift. Ask God for patience and presence, and for the grace to love them well and honor them through the changes that come with aging.
