A Prayer for Your Family

Pray for your family by naming what your household actually needs, patience, protection, unity, and asking God to be the center of it. Joshua 24:15 anchors this prayer, declaring that as for you and your house, you will serve the Lord, even when the day to day is messy and imperfect.

But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15 (NIV)

A prayer

Father, thank You for my family, even on the days we are short with each other and nobody feels understood. We are not perfect, and some of our wounds run deep. I bring each person before You now, the ones I find easy to love and the ones I am still learning to be patient with. Teach us to listen before we speak, and to forgive quickly instead of keeping score. Where there is tension, bring peace. Where there is distance, draw us closer. Protect our home from things that would divide us, and give us the kind of love that stays even when it is hard. I want my household to know You, not because I demand it, but because they see You in how we treat one another. Like Joshua, I choose this day to serve You, and I ask You to hold my family in Your hands. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

Every family carries its own mix of noise and quiet, old arguments and small kindnesses that never make the news. Joshua's declaration in Joshua 24:15 was not made in a peaceful season either. He said it while leading a people who had wandered, doubted, and stumbled for a generation. Choosing to serve God as a household was a decision, not a feeling.

That is good news for the rest of us, because most families do not feel unified every day. Some mornings are calm and some are not. Praying for your family is less about asking God to remove every disagreement and more about asking Him to shape how you show up inside them, with patience instead of pride, and grace instead of grudges.

If your family is far from whole right now, this prayer is still for you. God is not waiting for your household to look perfect before He works in it. He meets families exactly where they are, in the ordinary rooms of ordinary homes, and He is present in the slow, daily work of loving people who are hard to love sometimes.

Common questions

What is a good Bible verse to pray over my family?

Joshua 24:15 is a strong anchor, declaring that a household will serve the Lord regardless of circumstances. Proverbs 3:5–6 and Deuteronomy 6:6–7 are also often prayed over families, asking for trust in God and for faith to be woven into everyday life at home.

How do I pray for a family that is struggling?

Start honestly. Name the specific tension or hurt instead of speaking in vague terms, and ask God for patience, wisdom, and healing. Pray for each family member by name, and ask God to work in what you cannot fix through your own effort alone.

Can one person's prayers change a whole family?

Prayer changes the one praying first, often making them more patient and less reactive, which shapes the whole home over time. Scripture does not promise a guaranteed outcome for others, but it does invite you to keep bringing your family before God consistently.
