A Prayer Before Surgery

A prayer before surgery brings your nerves honestly to God, asking for calm, a steady surgical team, and peace as you go into the operating room. Psalm 46:1 reminds us that 'God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble,' even in the moments before anesthesia takes over.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

A prayer

Lord, surgery is close now, and I feel the nerves settling into my chest. You are my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble, and I need that to be true for me today. Calm my mind as I wait. Steady my heart rate and quiet the what-ifs running through my thoughts. Give clear focus and skilled hands to my surgeon and the whole team caring for me. Watch over every detail, the ones I will never see or know about. Be with my family as they wait for news, and give them peace too. Whatever this surgery finds or fixes, I am trusting that you are with me before, during, and after. Thank you for being close in this moment, not distant or unaware. Help me rest in that closeness right now. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

There is a strange kind of vulnerability in surgery. You hand your body over to strangers and go to sleep not knowing exactly what will happen while you are unconscious. It makes sense that fear shows up here, and it is honest to bring that fear to God rather than pretend it away.

Psalm 46 was written for people facing upheaval, mountains falling into the sea, nations in turmoil. The surgical waiting room is its own kind of upheaval, smaller in scale but no less real to the person living it. God's refuge is not reserved for global disasters, it is available in pre-op rooms too.

Praying before surgery does not replace the skill of your medical team, it works alongside it. You can trust the training of the people in scrubs and still ask God to steady their hands. Faith and competent care are not competing things here, they are partners.

Common questions

What should I pray for before going into surgery?

Pray for calm nerves, a clear-headed surgical team, protection during the procedure, and peace for family members waiting. It also helps to pray for a smooth recovery afterward.

Does praying before surgery mean I should not be anxious?

No. Feeling anxious before surgery is normal and human. Prayer is not about eliminating every feeling, it is about bringing those feelings to God and asking for his peace alongside them.

Can I pray and still trust my medical team fully?

Absolutely. Trusting your doctors and praying to God are not in conflict. Prayer supports the medical care you are receiving, it does not compete with it.
