uh-HIM-ah-az · means “Brother of council, passionate brother”
Ahimaaz is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as brother of council or passionate brother. In the Old Testament, Ahimaaz is a loyal priest and swift runner who serves King David as a faithful messenger during Absalom's rebellion. His name carries a legacy of loyalty, speed, and devotion to duty.
“The watchman said, "It seems to me that the first one runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok." "He's a good man," the king said. "He comes with good news."”
The story behind the name
Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok the high priest, stays behind in Jerusalem during the rebellion of Absalom to act as an informant for King David. He hides at En Rogel, waiting for news about the plans of the rebel army. When a servant girl brings him crucial information, he narrowly escapes capture by hiding in a dry well.
After David's victory, Ahimaaz begs to run and bring the news to the king, even though Joab warns him that he will receive no reward. Known for his distinctive and incredibly swift running style, he outruns another messenger and reaches David first. When David sees him, the king immediately expects good news because of the runner's reliable character.
Though Ahimaaz has to deliver a complex message about the battle and the tragic death of David's son, his eagerness to serve is remembered. His story illustrates how God values swift obedience and a willing spirit in those who carry His messages. A boy named Ahimaaz is encouraged to run the race of faith with diligence and passion.
