Abiathar is a Hebrew name meaning father of abundance. In the Old Testament, Abiathar is the only priest to escape the massacre of Nob, fleeing to join David in the wilderness. He serves as David's loyal high priest and counselor through years of hardship and exile.

The story behind the name

Abiathar's story begins in tragedy when King Saul orders the execution of the priests of Nob for helping David. As the sole survivor of his father Ahimelech's household, Abiathar flees to David's camp in the wilderness, bringing with him the sacred ephod. David welcomes him, promising to protect him and declaring that their lives are bound together.

For years in the wilderness, Abiathar serves as David's priest, using the ephod to inquire of the Lord and seek divine guidance. His presence in the camp brings a sense of spiritual authority and hope to David's outlaw band. When David becomes king of Israel, Abiathar is appointed high priest alongside Zadok.

Though his later years are marked by a political misstep when he supports Adonijah's claim to the throne, his long loyalty to David is remembered. Solomon spares his life out of respect for the hardships Abiathar shared with David.
