Elliot
EL-ee-ut · means “My God is Yahweh”
Elliot is a modern English form related to Elijah and Elias, meaning "my God is Yahweh." It grew out of the medieval surname Elliott, itself likely derived from Elias. Elliot is not itself found in Scripture, but it carries the meaning and story of the prophet Elijah forward.
“After the fire there came a gentle whisper.”
The story behind the name
Elliot has risen quickly in American use over the past two decades, appreciated for its friendly, literary feel while still carrying a name of deep biblical weight underneath.
Elijah, the prophet behind the name, confronted King Ahab and Queen Jezebel's idolatry head-on, then stood alone against four hundred fifty prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. He prayed, and fire fell from heaven, proving before the whole nation whose God was real (1 Kings 18:36-39).
Yet Elijah also fled in exhausted fear afterward, and God did not scold him for it. Instead, God fed him, let him rest, and finally spoke to him not in wind or fire but in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12). A boy named Elliot carries both the courage of the mountain and the honesty of the wilderness.
A blessing to pray over Elliot
Lord, give this son Elijah's boldness when the moment calls for it, and Elijah's peace to rest in Your gentle whisper when he is weary. Amen.
