Anika

uh-NEE-kuh · means Grace, favor

Anika is a Scandinavian and German form related to Anna and Hannah, meaning "grace" or "favor." Like Anya, it derives from Hannah's answered prayer for a son in 1 Samuel, and from Anna the prophetess, who spent her long widowhood worshiping faithfully in the temple.

She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.
Luke 2:37 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Anika has long been used across Scandinavia and Germany and has become a familiar, gently rising choice in the United States, valued for its soft sound and clear meaning.

Hannah wept before the Lord for years, misunderstood even by the priest who watched her pray without speaking aloud, yet God heard her and gave her Samuel, whom she later brought to the temple to serve there as she had promised (1 Samuel 1-2).

Anna the prophetess later lived much of her life in that same temple, worshiping night and day, and was rewarded by being one of the first to recognize the infant Jesus as the promised redemption of Israel (Luke 2:36-38). A daughter named Anika carries a name shaped by grace received through long, faithful waiting.

A blessing to pray over Anika

Father, give this daughter grace that grows deeper the longer she waits on You, and a faith as steady as Anna's, worshiping through every season. Amen.
