Mary

MAIR-ee · from Miryam · means Beloved, or bitterness

Mary is a Hebrew name, the Greek form of Miriam, traditionally understood as "beloved" though sometimes linked to "bitterness." She was the young woman chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus, responding to the angel Gabriel's astonishing announcement with humble faith: "I am the Lord's servant" (Luke 1:38).

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:38 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Mary was a young woman in Nazareth, engaged to Joseph, when the angel Gabriel appeared and told her she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God. Though the news was overwhelming, Mary responded with remarkable trust: "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled" (Luke 1:38).

Mary traveled to visit her relative Elizabeth, and there she sang a song of praise known as the Magnificat, celebrating God's mercy and might (Luke 1:46-55). She gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem, treasured the shepherds' words about Him in her heart, and later stood at the foot of the cross as her son was crucified.

Mary's obedience at the very beginning of Jesus' earthly life and her presence at its most painful end mark her as a model of faithful devotion. A daughter named Mary carries a name central to the story of salvation itself, beloved and chosen for a holy purpose.
