Elizabeth
ih-LIZ-uh-buhth · from Elisheva · means “God is my oath”
Elizabeth is a Hebrew name meaning "God is my oath" or "my God is abundance." She was the mother of John the Baptist, righteous and faithful in years of childlessness before God granted her a son in her old age, just as He had once done for Sarah (Luke 1:5-25).
“In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!"”
The story behind the name
Elizabeth was married to Zechariah, a priest, and Scripture describes them both as righteous, observing all the Lord's commandments faithfully. Yet they remained childless into old age, a source of quiet sorrow that Elizabeth carried for years (Luke 1:6-7).
When the angel Gabriel told Zechariah he would have a son, he doubted, but Elizabeth conceived just as promised, later saying, "The Lord has done this for me. In these days he has shown his favor" (Luke 1:25). When her relative Mary came to visit, newly pregnant with Jesus, Elizabeth's own baby leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Elizabeth was the first to bless Mary and recognize the child she carried as her Lord (Luke 1:41-43). A daughter named Elizabeth carries a name of patient faithfulness and the joy of God's promises fulfilled in His own perfect timing.
