Bathsheba

bath-SHEE-buh · from Batsheva · means Daughter of the oath

Bathsheba is a Hebrew name meaning "daughter of the oath" or "daughter of abundance." While her story began in tragedy and exploitation, she became David's queen, the mother of King Solomon, and an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Her legacy represents redemption, wisdom, and God's restorative grace.

Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and made love to her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon.
2 Samuel 12:24 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah the Hittite before King David committed adultery with her and arranged Uriah's death in battle. She endured the tragic loss of her husband and their first infant child, finding herself swept into the turmoil of the royal palace. Yet God met her in her grief, and David comforted her, naming their next son Solomon.

As queen, Bathsheba showed great wisdom and political acumen, especially when she secured the throne for Solomon against the rebellion of Adonijah. She was treated with immense respect by Solomon, who placed a throne for his mother at his right hand. Her transformation from a victim of abuse of power to an honored queen mother is a powerful story of survival.

In the genealogy of Matthew 1, Bathsheba is honored as one of the few women in the lineage of Jesus, mentioned as the mother of Solomon. A daughter named Bathsheba carries a legacy of resilience, dignity, and the beauty of a life redeemed. Her story shows that God can take our deepest trials and make them part of His glory.
