Tamar
TAY-mar · from Tamar · means “Date palm, palm tree”
Tamar is a Hebrew name meaning "date palm" or "palm tree," symbolizing uprightness and beauty. She was Judah's daughter-in-law who fought for her legal rights after being neglected, becoming a key ancestor of King David and Jesus Christ. Her story represents justice, resilience, and survival.
“Judah recognized them and said, "She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn't give her to my son Shelah."”
The story behind the name
Tamar was left widowed and vulnerable after Judah's two eldest sons died, and Judah failed to keep his promise to give her his youngest son Shelah in marriage. Denied her rightful place and inheritance, she took matters into her own hands to secure her future. By disguising herself, she conceived twin sons, Perez and Zerah, through Judah himself.
When Judah discovered the pregnancy and initially condemned her, Tamar presented his staff and seal, forcing him to admit that she was more righteous than he was. Her courage preserved the family line from which the tribe of Judah would grow. Her twin son Perez became the ancestor of King David.
Tamar is one of the few women specifically honored in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1, showing God's inclusion of those who fought through exclusion. A daughter named Tamar carries a heritage of uprightness, strength, and courageous survival. Her life represents the palm tree that bends but does not break under pressure.
