Debra
DEB-ruh · means “Bee”
Debra is a modern spelling of Deborah, meaning "bee." It derives directly from Deborah, the prophetess and judge who led Israel to victory and sang a bold song of triumph and praise recorded in Judges chapters 4 and 5.
“Then Deborah said to Barak, "Go! This is the day the Lord has given Sisera into your hands."”
The story behind the name
Debra was among the most common American girls' names of the 1950s and 1960s, favored for its simple, modern spelling of an already well-loved biblical name.
Deborah was a prophetess who judged Israel during a time when the nation had no other clear leadership. When the military commander Barak hesitated to go to battle without her, Deborah agreed to go with him, telling him plainly that God would deliver their enemy into their hands (Judges 4:6-9).
After the victory, Deborah sang a triumphant song giving God the credit for all of it, celebrating that He had fought for His people (Judges 5). A daughter named Debra carries a name marked by bold, unshaken leadership and a heart quick to give God the glory.
A blessing to pray over Debra
Lord, raise up courage in this daughter the way You raised up Deborah. Let her lead wherever You call her, and let her praise always point back to You. Amen.
