Rebekah
rih-BEK-uh · from Rivkah · means “To bind, captivating”
Rebekah is a Hebrew name traditionally understood to mean "to bind" or "captivating." She is introduced at a well, offering water to a stranger's servant and his camels, an act of generosity that marked her as Isaac's God-chosen wife (Genesis 24). Her name has come to represent both hospitality and quiet resolve.
“So they called Rebekah and asked her, "Will you go with this man?" "I will go," she said.”
The story behind the name
Abraham's servant traveled far to find a wife for Isaac, praying for a clear sign: the young woman who offered to water his camels as well as give him a drink would be the one. Rebekah did exactly that, without being asked, running back and forth to the well until every camel had enough (Genesis 24:19-20).
When her family asked if she was willing to leave home and marry a man she had never met, Rebekah answered simply, "I will go" (Genesis 24:58). It was a decision made in faith, trusting a promise larger than her own comfort.
Rebekah later became the mother of twins, Jacob and Esau, and her life held both deep devotion and difficult family struggle. A daughter named Rebekah carries a name of ready generosity and the courage to say yes to God's leading, even into the unknown.
