Ehud

EE-hud · from Ehud · means Strong, united

Ehud is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as meaning "strong" or "united." He was Israel's second judge, a left-handed leader who devised a daring plan to deliver his people from eighteen years of Moabite oppression. His story highlights how God uses unique traits for His purposes.

That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years.
Judges 3:30 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Ehud lived during a dark time when the Moabites dominated Israel and forced them to pay heavy tributes. Being left-handed, Ehud was able to strap a double-edged sword to his right thigh, where the Moabite guards did not expect to find a weapon. He went to present the tribute, waiting for the right moment.

Ehud secured a private meeting with the Moabite king by claiming to have a secret message from God. He delivered the fatal blow, escaped quietly, and blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim to rally the Israelites. His swift action broke the enemy's grip and mobilized the people.

Following this victory, Israel enjoyed eighty years of peace, the longest period of rest recorded in the book of Judges. A boy named Ehud carries a legacy of courage, strategic thinking, and dedication to his community. His life teaches that God can use our distinct qualities to accomplish great things.
