Solomon

SAHL-uh-muhn · from Shelomoh · means Peaceful

Solomon is a Hebrew name meaning "peaceful." As David's son and successor, he was the king who built the first temple in Jerusalem and was blessed by God with legendary wisdom. His name is an enduring symbol of peace, understanding, and royal splendor.

So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?
1 Kings 3:9 (NIV)

The story behind the name

When Solomon succeeded his father David as king, God appeared to him in a dream and offered to give him whatever he asked. Rather than requesting wealth, long life, or victory over his enemies, the young king asked for wisdom to govern his people well. God was pleased with this request and granted him unparalleled understanding along with honor and riches.

Under Solomon's peaceful reign, Israel experienced a golden age of prosperity and cultural achievement. His greatest accomplishment was constructing the magnificent temple in Jerusalem, a house of prayer where God's presence dwelt among His people. He also wrote thousands of proverbs and songs, capturing wisdom that continues to instruct believers today.

Although Solomon's later years were clouded by the influence of his many foreign wives, his story remains a powerful lesson on the value of seeking God's wisdom first. His name points forward to Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate Prince of Peace. A boy named Solomon carries a heritage of seeking discernment and living in the peace that only God can provide.
