Jeremy

JAIR-uh-mee · means The Lord exalts, appointed by God

Jeremy is an English form of Jeremiah, meaning "the LORD exalts" or "appointed by God." It is not the exact form found in most Bible translations, but it derives directly from the weeping prophet Jeremiah, whom God set apart before he was even born (Jeremiah 1:5).

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jeremy was a common American name through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, valued for being both biblically rooted and easy to say. It has settled into steady, familiar use since.

Jeremiah was called to prophesy in one of Judah's darkest seasons, warning of coming judgment while most people refused to listen. God told him plainly, "Before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5). It was a hard, lonely calling that Jeremiah carried faithfully for decades.

Despite constant rejection, Jeremiah also delivered some of Scripture's most hopeful promises, including God's plans "to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). A boy named Jeremy carries a name of purpose given before birth, and hope held onto through hard seasons.
