When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow...
1 Samuel 1:21 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Elkanah lived in the hill country of Ephraim and was a Levite who made annual trips to Shiloh to sacrifice and worship the Lord. Despite the spiritual decay of the nation under the priest Eli, Elkanah maintained a dedicated rhythm of worship. He led his household in devotion, showing consistency and faith.

When his wife Hannah wept because she had no children, Elkanah comforted her, asking if he was not better to her than ten sons. After God answered Hannah's prayers and Samuel was born, Elkanah supported her vow to dedicate the boy to the Lord. He joined her in offering sacrifices of thanksgiving at the tabernacle.
