Andrew
AN-droo · from Andreas · means “Manly, strong”
Andrew comes from the Greek Andreas, meaning "manly" or "strong one," from aner, "man." Andrew was the first disciple called by Jesus and immediately ran to bring his brother Peter, making him a quiet model of the believer who introduces others to Christ.
“The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah."”
The story behind the name
Andrew had been a disciple of John the Baptist, and when John pointed to Jesus and said, "Look, the Lamb of God," Andrew followed Him at once (John 1:35-40). He is often called the first-called disciple for this reason.
Andrew's first recorded act as a disciple was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah," bringing him straight to Jesus (John 1:40-41). Later, it was Andrew who noticed a boy with five loaves and two fish before the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:8-9).
Andrew rarely takes center stage in the Gospels, yet again and again he is the one bringing someone else to Jesus. A boy named Andrew carries a name of quiet strength, the kind that points others toward Christ rather than toward itself.
A blessing to pray over Andrew
Lord, give this son the quiet strength of Andrew, quick to find Jesus and quicker still to bring others to Him. May his life point people toward You. Amen.
