Asa
AY-suh · from Asa · means “Healer, physician”
Asa is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as "healer" or "physician." As king of Judah, Asa removed idols from the land, strengthened the nation's defenses, and cried out to God for help before an overwhelming enemy army, trusting the Lord's power over sheer numbers.
“Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, Lord our God, for we rely on you.”
The story behind the name
Asa became king of Judah at a young age and did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, removing foreign altars, smashing sacred stones, and even removing his own grandmother from her position because she had made an obscene image for idol worship (1 Kings 15, 2 Chronicles 14).
When a vast Cushite army of a million men marched against Judah, Asa did not rely on his own strength. He cried out, "Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty," and God routed the enemy before Judah (2 Chronicles 14:11).
Asa's reign was long and largely faithful, though his later years show him leaning on foreign alliances rather than God alone. A boy named Asa carries a name for calling on God's power in overwhelming moments, trusting help that comes from the Lord rather than numbers or strength.
A blessing to pray over Asa
Father, when this son faces battles too big for him, may he cry out to You the way Asa did, and may he know that You alone can help the powerless against the mighty. Amen.
