Noa

NOH-uh · from No'ah · means Motion, movement

Noa is a Hebrew name meaning "motion" or "movement." She was one of the five daughters of Zelophehad who boldly stood before Moses to ask for their father's inheritance, challenging the ancient property laws. Her name represents a legacy of faith, legal justice, and courageous initiative.

The Lord said to him, "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and turn their father's inheritance over to them."
Numbers 27:6-7 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Noa and her four sisters (Mahlah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah) lived during Israel's wilderness wanderings. Their father Zelophehad died without having any sons, which under the existing customs meant his family name and land portion would be lost. Refusing to let their father's memory fade, the sisters took the bold step of bringing their case directly to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the entire assembly, arguing that it was only right for their father's property to go to them. Moses brought their case before the Lord, and God declared that the daughters were right and should receive the inheritance. Their initiative established a new law of inheritance in Israel, protecting the rights of daughters.

Noa's story is recorded in Numbers 27 as a landmark victory for justice and equity in the covenant community. A daughter named Noa carries a name that means progress and active faith. Her legacy encourages women to speak up for justice and trust that God hears their appeals.
