Gianna

jee-AH-nuh · means The Lord is gracious

Gianna is the Italian feminine form of John, meaning "the Lord is gracious." It is not itself a scriptural name, but it draws its meaning from John the Baptist and John the Apostle, both marked in the Gospels by God's unearned kindness toward them and through them.

But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John."
Luke 1:13 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Gianna has surged in American popularity over the past two decades, admired for its musical Italian sound and its warm, graceful meaning.

John the Baptist's birth was itself a sign of grace, given to Elizabeth and Zechariah long after they had stopped hoping for a child, exactly as the angel Gabriel promised (Luke 1:13-14). John grew up to prepare the way for Jesus, pointing always to someone greater than himself.

John the Apostle, a different John, walked closely with Jesus and later described himself simply as the disciple Jesus loved. A daughter named Gianna carries a name that celebrates God's grace both received and shared freely with others.

A blessing to pray over Gianna

Lord, let this daughter's life be marked by Your grace from her very first days, just as John's was. May she grow up pointing others toward You. Amen.
