Mariah

muh-RY-uh · means Beloved, or bitter (debated)

Mariah is an English form of Mary, or Miriam, whose exact Hebrew meaning is debated among scholars, with "beloved" and "bitter" both proposed. It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it derives from Mary, the mother of Jesus, whose faith and song of praise shaped the whole story of the New Testament.

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May your word to me be fulfilled." Then the angel left her.
Luke 1:38 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Mariah rose sharply in American popularity through the 1990s, helped along by its bright, musical sound, and it has remained a familiar, well-loved name since.

Mary was a young woman in Nazareth when the angel Gabriel came to her with news that would upend her life: she would carry the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38). She answered simply, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled," and then traveled to see her cousin Elizabeth.

There Mary sang out in praise, a song now called the Magnificat: "My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior" (Luke 1:46-47). A daughter named Mariah carries a legacy of humble trust and a heart quick to praise God for what He is doing.
