Petra

PEH-truh · means Rock

Petra is the feminine form of Peter, meaning "rock." It is not itself found in Scripture, but its root belongs to Simon Peter, whom Jesus renamed the rock and called to lead His church, promising him that not even the gates of death could stand against it.

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Matthew 16:18 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Petra is widely used across Central and Eastern Europe and has slowly become more familiar in the United States, chosen for its short, solid sound and clear meaning.

Jesus asked His disciples who they believed Him to be, and Simon answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Jesus responded by renaming him Peter, saying, "On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it" (Matthew 16:18).

Peter went on to deny Jesus, weep bitterly, and later be restored and sent out to lead, eventually becoming one of the most influential voices in the early church. A daughter named Petra carries that same promise of a life built on solid ground, however shaky the path there might be.

A blessing to pray over Petra

Father, build this daughter's life on solid rock, unshaken no matter what storms come against her. Let her stand firm in what she knows to be true of You. Amen.
