Sadie

SAY-dee · means Princess

Sadie is an English pet form of Sarah, meaning "princess." It is not itself found in Scripture, but it comes directly from Sarah, wife of Abraham, whom God renamed and promised would become the mother of nations even though she was long past childbearing years.

Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised.
Genesis 21:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Sadie was common in the late 1800s, faded through much of the twentieth century, and has come roaring back into American popularity over the last twenty years, loved for its warm, old-fashioned charm.

Sarah laughed when she overheard God's promise that she would bear a son in her old age, and she later admitted it when confronted, but God kept His word anyway (Genesis 18:12-14, 21:1-2). Isaac was born exactly as God had promised.

Sarah's story is one of long waiting and eventual, surprising joy, a princess in name who became, in the end, a mother of nations. A daughter named Sadie carries that same promise, that God's timing can outlast even our doubt.

A blessing to pray over Sadie

Lord, keep every promise You have spoken over this daughter's life, just as You kept Yours to Sarah. Turn her doubt, wherever it hides, into laughter and joy. Amen.
