Sarah

SAIR-uh · from Sarah · means Princess, noblewoman

Sarah is a Hebrew name meaning "princess" or "noblewoman." God gave Abraham's wife this name himself, promising that she would become the mother of nations and that kings would come from her (Genesis 17:15-16). Her long wait for a son, Isaac, became one of Scripture's clearest pictures of God's faithfulness to His promises.

Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."
Genesis 21:6 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Sarah was Abraham's wife, and for decades she carried the ache of barrenness in a culture that measured a woman's worth by children. God had promised Abraham countless descendants, yet year after year passed with no son for Sarah. When she overheard a visiting messenger say she would bear a child within the year, she laughed to herself, doubting it was possible at her age (Genesis 18:12).

God kept His word anyway. At ninety years old, Sarah gave birth to Isaac, whose very name means laughter, turning her private doubt into public joy: "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me" (Genesis 21:6).

The New Testament remembers Sarah as a woman of faith who considered God faithful to keep His promise, even when it seemed impossible (Hebrews 11:11). A daughter named Sarah carries the name of a princess and the story of a promise kept against every human expectation.

A blessing to pray over Sarah

Lord, may this daughter carry the noble dignity of her name and the faith of Sarah, trusting Your promises even when the waiting is long. Turn her doubts into laughter and her hope into joy. Amen.
