Isaiah

eye-ZAY-uh · from Yeshayahu · means Salvation of the Lord

Isaiah is a Hebrew name meaning "salvation of the Lord" or "the Lord is salvation." He was one of the greatest prophets in the Old Testament, whose book contains some of the clearest prophecies about the birth, ministry, and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
Isaiah 6:8 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Isaiah received his prophetic call in a vision where he saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, with the temple filled with His glory. When a seraph touched his lips with a burning coal to cleanse his sin, Isaiah heard the Lord ask who would go for Him. He immediately answered with courage, saying, "Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8).

Throughout his ministry, Isaiah confronted the people of Judah about their sins and urged them to trust in God rather than foreign alliances. He also looked far into the future, predicting that a virgin would conceive and give birth to a son named Immanuel, meaning "God with us." His writings provided comfort to a nation in exile, promising a future of restoration and peace.

Isaiah's prophecies are so central to the Christian faith that his book is the most frequently quoted Old Testament book in the New Testament. His vivid descriptions of the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 pointed directly to the sacrificial work of Jesus. A boy named Isaiah carries a name that proclaims salvation and a legacy of bold prophetic hope.
