A Prayer for Mental Health

A prayer for mental health honestly names what you are carrying, anxiety, depression, or exhaustion, and asks God to draw near in it. Psalm 34:18 says 'the Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,' a reminder that struggling does not push God away, and professional support belongs alongside prayer.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

A prayer

Lord, my mind has felt heavy lately, and I am tired of pretending it has not. You say you are close to the brokenhearted and near to those who are crushed in spirit, so I am trusting that you have not moved away from me, even now. Meet me in the anxious thoughts, the low days, the moments when getting out of bed feels like too much. I do not fully understand why my mind works the way it does, but you do, and you are not ashamed of me for struggling. Give me courage to reach out for help, whether that is a counselor, a doctor, or a friend who will listen without judging. Help me be patient with myself the way you are patient with me. Steady my thoughts today, even a little. I am not carrying this alone, because you are close. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflection

It is worth saying plainly, struggling with mental health is not a failure of faith. Some of Scripture's most faithful people, David among them, wrote honestly about despair, fear, and exhaustion. Psalm 34:18 was written by someone who knew what it felt like to be crushed in spirit and still trusted God's nearness.

God's closeness in these verses is not a promise that sadness or anxiety will vanish the moment we pray. It is a promise of presence in the middle of it. That distinction matters, because it means you can be genuinely struggling and genuinely held at the same time, without one canceling out the other.

Prayer is a real source of comfort, but it works best alongside professional care, not as a substitute for it. Talking to a counselor, seeing a doctor, or starting treatment is not a lack of trust in God. It is often exactly how his care reaches us, through the people and tools he has provided.

Common questions

Does struggling with mental health mean my faith is weak?

No. Mental health struggles are not a sign of weak faith or spiritual failure. Many faithful people throughout Scripture experienced deep sorrow and anxiety while still trusting God.

Should I see a counselor instead of praying?

You do not have to choose. Prayer and professional care, such as counseling or medical treatment, work well together. Seeking help from a counselor or doctor is a wise and often necessary step.

What does it mean that God is close to the brokenhearted?

Psalm 34:18 means God's presence is especially near to those who are hurting or crushed in spirit. It is a promise of comfort and companionship, not a guarantee that pain disappears instantly.
