Achsah
AK-suh · from Akhsah · means “Anklet, adorned”
Achsah is a Hebrew name meaning "anklet" or "adorned." She was Caleb's daughter who was given in marriage to the judge Othniel after he conquered Kiriath Sepher. Achsah famously asked her father for springs of water, representing boldness, wisdom, and asking for God's blessings.
“She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.”
The story behind the name
Achsah was Caleb's daughter, raised in a household marked by Caleb's bold faith in God's promises. When Othniel won her hand in marriage, Caleb gave her a portion of dry land in the Negev. Knowing that land without water would be useless, Achsah showed great initiative by going to Caleb with a specific request.
She got down from her donkey, and Caleb asked her what she wanted. Boldly yet respectfully, she asked for a special favor, requesting that since Caleb had given her land in the south, he also give her springs of water. Caleb immediately granted her request, giving her both the upper and lower springs.
Her story, recorded in Joshua 15 and Judges 1, is a beautiful picture of asking a father for what is needed to make an inheritance flourish. A daughter named Achsah carries a legacy of wisdom, bold prayer, and spiritual resourcefulness. She is reminded to seek the living springs of God.
