Gabriella

gah-bree-EL-uh · means God is my strength

Gabriella is a feminine form derived from Gabriel, meaning "God is my strength." It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it is built directly from the archangel Gabriel's name, the messenger who announced both John the Baptist's birth and the birth of Jesus.

The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus."
Luke 1:30-31 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Gabriella has been a favorite across Italy, Spain, and Latin America for generations and has climbed steadily in the United States since the 1990s, admired for its musical sound and clear strength.

Gabriel appears first in Daniel, sent to help Daniel understand a vision, described as one who came in swift flight (Daniel 9:21). Centuries later Gabriel stood before Zechariah in the temple and told him his prayer had been answered, then before Mary in Nazareth with news that would change history: "You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus" (Luke 1:30-31).

Gabriel's own words to Mary explain his name best: "For no word from God will ever fail" (Luke 1:37). A daughter named Gabriella carries that same confidence, that God's strength stands behind every promise He makes.

A blessing to pray over Gabriella

Lord, let this daughter find her strength in You alone, like the messenger whose name she carries. May she trust that no word from You will ever fail. Amen.
