Stephanie

STEF-uh-nee · means Crown

Stephanie is the feminine form of Stephen, meaning "crown." It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it derives directly from Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose faith under pressure earned him a place among the most honored figures in the early church (Acts 6-7).

But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
Acts 7:55 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Stephanie has been a steady favorite across the English-speaking world since the mid-1900s, admired for its graceful sound and its clear tie to a name meaning crown.

Stephen was chosen as one of the first deacons in the early church, a man "full of faith and of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6:5). He preached boldly and performed great wonders, which stirred up jealousy and false accusations against him before the religious council.

As he was being stoned, Stephen looked up and saw the glory of God, and prayed for those killing him just as Jesus had prayed for His own executioners (Acts 7:59-60). A daughter named Stephanie carries a name built on that same crown of faithfulness, held even to the very end.

A blessing to pray over Stephanie

Lord, crown this daughter's life with faith that does not waver, even when it costs her something. Let her see Your glory clearly in every season. Amen.
