Agabus

AG-uh-bus · means Beloved, locust

Agabus is a Greek name traditionally understood as beloved or locust. In the New Testament, Agabus is a prophet from Jerusalem who travels to Antioch and Caesarea, warning the early church of a coming famine and predicting Paul's arrest. His name represents prophetic insight, vigilance, and caring preparation.

One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)
Acts 11:28 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Agabus first appears in the book of Acts as a prophet who travels from Jerusalem to Antioch. Standing up in the gathering, he predicts through the Holy Spirit that a severe famine will spread over the entire Roman world. In response, the believers prepare to send relief to their brothers and sisters living in Judea.

Years later, Agabus meets the apostle Paul in Caesarea and performs a dramatic symbolic action. He takes Paul's belt, binds his own hands and feet, and declares that the Holy Spirit warns that the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of the belt in this way. Despite the tears of the believers, Paul resolutely prepares to go.

The prophetic ministry of Agabus was not meant to cause panic but to help the early church prepare for trials and stand together in love. His life shows the importance of listening to the Holy Spirit and supporting one's community in times of need. A boy named Agabus carries a legacy of spiritual sensitivity, wisdom, and active care.
