Lysias
LIS-ee-uhs · means “Releasing, liberating”
Lysias is a Greek name traditionally understood as releasing or liberating. In the New Testament, Claudius Lysias is the Roman commander who rescues the apostle Paul from a hostile crowd in Jerusalem. His name carries a legacy of protection, swift action, and being an instrument of God's safe keeping.
“I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment.”
The story behind the name
Claudius Lysias first appears in the book of Acts when a riot breaks out in Jerusalem against the apostle Paul. Hearing the uproar, the commander runs down with soldiers to rescue Paul from the angry mob. He restores order and takes Paul into custody, preserving his life from immediate danger (Acts 21).
Later, when Lysias learns of a secret plot by forty men to assassinate Paul, he acts with speed and wisdom. He orders a large military escort to guard Paul and transfer him safely to Caesarea under the cover of night. Through his decisive leadership, Paul is kept safe to continue his ministry.
Although Lysias is a secular Roman officer, God uses his authority and duty to fulfill His promise that Paul would testify in Rome. His actions demonstrate how God can use anyone, even foreign leaders, to protect His servants and advance His gospel. A boy named Lysias carries a legacy of protection and divine deliverance.
