Ethan
EE-thuhn · from Eitan · means “Firm, enduring, strong”
Ethan is a Hebrew name meaning "firm," "enduring," or "strong." Scripture's Ethan the Ezrahite was renowned for his wisdom in the days of Solomon and is credited as the author of Psalm 89, a majestic hymn about God's unfailing covenant love. The name has long stood for steady, unshakable faith.
“I will sing of the Lord's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.”
The story behind the name
First Kings tells us that Solomon's wisdom surpassed that of Ethan the Ezrahite and other wise men of his day, a comparison meant to show just how remarkable Solomon's wisdom truly was (1 Kings 4:31). Ethan himself must have been widely respected for his own insight.
The title of Psalm 89 credits Ethan the Ezrahite as its author, a psalm that begins by celebrating God's steadfast love and faithfulness and moves through the covenant God made with David. It is one of the most theologically rich psalms in the entire book.
Even amid the psalm's later lament over hardship, its opening confidence in God's enduring faithfulness never fully fades. A boy named Ethan carries a name built for steadiness, the kind of firm, enduring faith that can hold fast through any season.
A blessing to pray over Ethan
Father, make this son firm and enduring like his name, steady in wisdom and unshakable in his trust in Your faithfulness through every generation. Amen.
