Elias

ih-LY-us · from Elias · means My God is Yahweh

Elias is the Greek form of Elijah, meaning "my God is Yahweh." It appears in the Greek New Testament as the way Elijah's name is rendered (for example, at the transfiguration in Matthew 17). Elias is a genuine form of the prophet's name in Scripture, though English Bibles usually translate it back to Elijah.

Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him."
1 Kings 18:21 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Elias has long been used across Europe and Latin America as a classic form of Elijah, and it has climbed steadily in American use over the last twenty years, favored for its clean, timeless sound. In the Greek New Testament it is the exact word used for the prophet's name.

The prophet behind the name stood alone against four hundred fifty prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and called down fire from heaven in front of a wavering nation (1 Kings 18). His name was itself a declaration: my God is Yahweh, not Baal, not any other.

Elijah also knew deep exhaustion and fear, and God met him there too, not in wind or earthquake but in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19). A son named Elias carries a name of bold faith and honest weakness both, and the promise that God meets us in either.

A blessing to pray over Elias

Father, may this son declare with his life that You alone are God, bold like Elijah on the mountain and honest like Elijah in the wilderness. Amen.
