Davina
duh-VEE-nuh · means “Beloved”
Davina is a feminine form of David, meaning "beloved." It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it is drawn directly from David, the shepherd boy who became Israel's greatest king, described by God Himself as "a man after my own heart" (1 Samuel 13:14).
“All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's.”
The story behind the name
Davina has long been used in Scotland and has grown gradually more familiar elsewhere, chosen by families who want a graceful feminine form of one of the Bible's most beloved names.
David was the youngest of Jesse's sons, overlooked until Samuel anointed him king while he was still tending sheep (1 Samuel 16). As a young man he faced the giant Goliath with nothing but a sling and total confidence in God, declaring, "the battle is the Lord's" (1 Samuel 17:47).
David's life held both remarkable faith and real failure, yet he remained a man who returned honestly to God again and again, writing many of the Psalms out of both his highest praise and his deepest repentance. A daughter named Davina carries the legacy of a beloved, imperfect heart that never stopped turning back to God.
A blessing to pray over Davina
Father, give this daughter David's brave heart and his honest, ready return to You whenever she strays. May she always know herself deeply beloved. Amen.
