Jamie

JAY-mee · means He grasps the heel, or supplanter

Jamie is a diminutive form of James, itself an English variation of Jacob, meaning "he grasps the heel" or "supplanter." It is not itself a scriptural name, but it carries forward James, the name shared by two of Jesus' twelve apostles, including James the brother of John.

He had James, brother of John, put to death with the sword.
Acts 12:2 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Jamie has been used for both boys and girls across the English-speaking world for generations, valued for its warm, friendly sound and its clear tie to the classic name James.

James, son of Zebedee, was one of Jesus' inner circle along with his brother John and Peter, present at moments like the transfiguration that the other disciples did not witness (Mark 9:2). He and John were nicknamed "sons of thunder," known for their bold, sometimes impulsive zeal (Mark 3:17).

James became the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, killed by Herod Agrippa for his faith (Acts 12:2). A child named Jamie carries the name of a disciple whose loyalty to Jesus cost him everything and who counted it worth it.

A blessing to pray over Jamie

Lord, give this child James's fierce loyalty to You, tempered by Your grace. Whatever the cost of following You, let their devotion never waver. Amen.
