Gabrielle
gab-ree-EL · means “God is my strength”
Gabrielle is the French feminine form derived from Gabriel, meaning "God is my strength." Like Gabriella, it is not itself a scriptural name, but it is built on the archangel Gabriel's name, the messenger who told Zechariah and Mary that God's long-awaited promises were about to be fulfilled.
“I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.”
The story behind the name
Gabrielle rose to popularity in the United States through the 1980s and 1990s, favored for its elegant French shape, and it remains a familiar, well-loved name today.
Gabriel first appears in the book of Daniel, sent to explain a vision the prophet could not understand on his own (Daniel 8:16). His role throughout Scripture is always the same: he carries God's word to people at the exact moment they need to hear it, whether Daniel, Zechariah, or Mary.
In Luke's Gospel, Gabriel tells Zechariah of a son to be born to him and Elizabeth, and later tells Mary of the Son who would be called Jesus (Luke 1). A daughter named Gabrielle carries a name built on that same steady strength, God's word delivered right on time.
A blessing to pray over Gabrielle
Father, may this daughter carry good news wherever she goes, steady and strong like the messenger behind her name. Let her stand confidently in Your presence all her days. Amen.
