Dinah

DY-nuh · from Dinah · means Judged, vindicated

Dinah is a Hebrew name meaning "judged" or "vindicated." She was the daughter of Jacob and Leah whose story in Genesis 34 includes great pain, and Scripture does not look away from what was done to her. Her name has come to represent honesty about suffering and hope for God's justice.

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
Genesis 34:1 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Dinah was the daughter of Jacob and Leah, born after six sons and named in a family where names carried whole prayers. Genesis 34 tells a hard and honest story: while visiting the women of the land, Dinah was assaulted by Shechem, a prince of the region, and her brothers responded with violence of their own.

Scripture does not soften what happened to Dinah, and it does not pretend her brothers' revenge made things right. The chapter is left unresolved and painful on purpose, a truthful picture of a broken world where God's people still stumble badly.

Naming a daughter Dinah today is not naming her after tragedy but after a young woman Scripture refused to erase or silence. Her name, judged or vindicated, points forward to a God who sees every hidden wrong and promises that justice will not be forgotten.

A blessing to pray over Dinah

Lord, be near this daughter in every hidden place, and let her know she is seen and valued by You. Give her strength to walk in wholeness and let her story always bend toward Your justice and healing. Amen.
