Abigail
AB-ih-gayl · from Avigayil · means “My father's joy”
Abigail is a Hebrew name meaning "my father's joy" or "my father rejoices." In 1 Samuel 25, Abigail's quick wisdom and humble courage turned David away from vengeance. Scripture calls her both intelligent and beautiful, and her name has stood for wise, gracious strength ever since.
“David said to Abigail, "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. May you be blessed for your good judgment."”
The story behind the name
Abigail was married to a wealthy, harsh man named Nabal, whose insult to David nearly brought disaster on their whole household. While others froze, Abigail acted. She loaded provisions, rode out to meet an armed and angry future king, and spoke with such wisdom that history turned on her words (1 Samuel 25).
Her speech is one of the longest by any woman in the Old Testament, and it is a masterpiece of peacemaking. David himself blessed her for it: "May you be blessed for your good judgment." After Nabal's death, Abigail became David's wife.
A daughter named Abigail carries a name of joy and a story of brave, gentle wisdom, the kind that steps forward at the right moment and turns anger aside with grace.
A blessing to pray over Abigail
Lord, give this daughter the wisdom and courage of Abigail, quick to make peace and brave enough to act when it matters. May she be her family's joy and Yours. Amen.
