Elijah

Elijah is a Hebrew name meaning "my God is Yahweh." It belongs to one of the boldest prophets in Scripture, a man who stood alone against the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and heard God speak in a gentle whisper. It is a declaration of loyalty to the one true God.

The story behind the name

Elijah appears suddenly in 1 Kings, a prophet from Tishbe who tells King Ahab that no rain will fall except at his word. In a nation that had drifted toward idols, his very name was a protest: my God is Yahweh. On Mount Carmel he faced four hundred fifty prophets of Baal alone, and when he prayed, fire fell from heaven (1 Kings 18).

Yet Scripture also shows us Elijah exhausted and afraid, running into the wilderness and asking God to take his life. God's answer was not a lecture but bread, water, sleep, and finally a gentle whisper on the mountain (1 Kings 19). The prophet of fire learned that God is just as present in quietness.

Elijah never saw death as we know it; he was carried to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2). Centuries later he stood with Moses beside Jesus at the transfiguration (Matthew 17). A child named Elijah carries a name that says one thing clearly: the Lord alone is God.
