Aaron

AIR-un · from Aharon · means Exalted, mountain of strength

Aaron is a Hebrew name traditionally understood as "exalted one" or "mountain of strength." As Moses' older brother and Israel's first high priest, Aaron spoke for Moses before Pharaoh and later led worship in the tabernacle. His story includes both faithful service and serious failure.

The Lord said to Aaron, "Go into the wilderness to meet Moses." So he met Moses at the mountain of God and kissed him.
Exodus 4:27 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Aaron was Moses' older brother, chosen by God to be his spokesman before Pharaoh when Moses felt he could not speak well (Exodus 4). Together they confronted Pharaoh again and again, and Aaron's staff played a role in several of the plagues that led to Israel's release from slavery.

God set Aaron apart as Israel's first high priest, clothed in garments of glory and beauty, to represent the people before God (Exodus 28). Yet Aaron also failed badly, giving in to the people's demand and building the golden calf while Moses was on the mountain (Exodus 32), a failure Scripture does not hide.

Despite that failure, Aaron was restored and served faithfully for the rest of his life, and his descendants became Israel's priestly line. A boy named Aaron carries a name of strength and honored service, along with the honest reminder that God restores those who fail and turn back.

A blessing to pray over Aaron

Lord, give this son a servant's heart like Aaron's, and when he stumbles, restore him quickly to faithful service. May his life honor You in whatever role You give him. Amen.
