Elise

ee-LEEZ · means God is my oath

Elise is a short form of Elizabeth, meaning "God is my oath." It is not itself a name in Scripture, but it comes directly from Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, whose long wait for a child ended when God kept His word to her and her husband Zechariah.

In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.
Luke 1:26-27 (NIV)

The story behind the name

Elise has been used quietly across Europe for centuries and has grown steadily in the United States in recent decades, favored for its short, elegant sound and clear biblical root.

Elizabeth was "righteous in the sight of God" yet childless for years, married to the priest Zechariah, until an angel told him in the temple that she would bear a son (Luke 1:5-13). She and Zechariah had waited long past the point of expecting an answer.

When Mary came to visit her, Elizabeth's unborn son leaped for joy, and Elizabeth cried out in blessing over her young cousin, filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41-42). A daughter named Elise carries that same quiet, patient faith rewarded in God's own time.

A blessing to pray over Elise

Father, keep every promise You have made over this daughter's life, just as You kept Your word to Elizabeth. Fill her with joy when Your answer finally comes. Amen.
