Eve

EEV · from Chavah · means Living, life-giver

Eve is a Hebrew name meaning "living" or "life-giver." She was the first woman, formed by God from Adam and named by him because she would become "the mother of all the living" (Genesis 3:20). Her story includes both the fall into sin and the first promise of a Redeemer (Genesis 3:15).

Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.
Genesis 3:20 (NIV)

The story behind the name

God formed Eve from Adam's rib as a companion suited perfectly for him, and the two lived together in the garden of Eden in unbroken fellowship with God. Genesis describes their union with striking simplicity: the two becoming one flesh (Genesis 2:22-24).

Deceived by the serpent, Eve ate the forbidden fruit and gave some to Adam as well, bringing sin into the world. Yet even in that moment of judgment, God spoke a promise of hope, telling the serpent that Eve's offspring would one day crush his head (Genesis 3:15), the Bible's first hint of the Savior to come.

Adam named his wife Eve because she would be the mother of all the living, and life continued for them beyond the garden, marked by both hardship and grace. A daughter named Eve carries a name of life itself and a story that reminds us hope can follow even our deepest failures.

A blessing to pray over Eve

Father, may this daughter carry the gift of life that her name proclaims, and may she always know that Your grace reaches further than any failure. Root her hope in the Redeemer You promised from the very beginning. Amen.
